The Faces of Carbs
There are Carbohydrates, and there are Carbohydrates. Carbs are important source of energy and fibre as well as prebiotic for our gut microbiome. A better understanding of the difference faces of Carbs is important to inform our food choices.
1. Fast vs Slow Carbs
Fast Carbs (food with a high glycemic index) causes blood sugar level to spike and fall shortly after eating. Conversely, Slow Carbs (food with a low glycemic index) causes a smoother sugar response profile with less demand on our body's insulin function. We prefer more Slow than Fast Carbs.
2. Rainbow Carbs
Wholefood Carbs from colourful plants contain not only plant fibres but also important plant biochemicals (phytonutrients) that are essential to optimal our health.
3. Fruit vs Veg Carbs
Both fruits and vegetables are important components of our diet. Try to include more vegetables instead of high-sugar fruits.
